in our school to protect our children, then call me crazy. >> the head of the nra speaks out exclusively to nbc news intensifying the emotionally charged debate on gun control. it's monday, december 24th. welcome to this special edition of "m schsnb"msnbc." as for president obama and john boehner, they are miles apart. neither are them talking about the deal the country really needs. kristin, we were talking yesterday that there's a possibility the president was considering coming back early perhaps thshould they strike a deal of some sort. >> i think it's likely president obama will cut his vacation short. we haven't gotten guidance about when that is going to happen. the white house is calling this a working vacation, but the reality is that talks are largely deadlocked over the fiscal cliff. there have been a few conversations going on at the staff level but really the expectation is that the hard work is going to get done when lawmakers return to washington after the christmas holiday, a little bit later on this week. that's when they're going to resume negotiations in earnest. of co

. tonight, the nra and its supporters are doubling down. we're hearing reports of a rush at gun shows and stores across america today, people buying assault weapons before a possible ban. as nra executives fanned out across the air waves with a message of defiance. abc's david kerley is on the story. >> reporter: the nra today stuck by its guns, that every american school should have an armed guard. >> if it's crazy to call for putting police and armed security in our schools to protect our children, then call me crazy. >> the nra has blood on its hands! >> reporter: two days ago. amid protesters and refusing to take questions, the head of the nra unveiled this plan. belittled by some. today wayne lapierre defends himself. >> when that horrible monster tried to shoot his way into that school, if a good guy with a gun was there, he might have been able to stop them. >> reporter: the murder massacre in newtown, connecticut, has led some nra supporters to call for control of guns and magazine clips. the nra supporters blame the media, the entertainment culture, and the lack of mental hea

in that school, a good guy. >> reporter: as the last of the newtown massacre victims are laid to rest, the nra has taken the position that armed security officers in schools are a major part of its solution. >> i have found the statements by the nra over the last couple days to be really disheartening because the statements seem to not reflect any understanding about the slaughter of children that happened in newtown, connecticut. here is what bothered me. the nra spokespeople have been willing to deal with every possible cause of gun lens except guns. >> reporter: school districts have grappled for years with the question of security, but advocates of more gun laws, the opposite of the nra, offered this. they remind everyone there was an armed security officer at the columbine high school the day of that 1999 massacre, and they say controlling gun violence requires a package of solutions beyond the schoolhouse door. barbara starr, cnn, washington. >> barbara, thank you. the brady campaign to prevent gun violence weighed in on the current debate. they released a statement from a father whose 8

. pete, the nra not budging on its message from the press briefing that it gave on friday to the appearance on "meet the press" yesterday. their point is that the best issue for the gun control problem is not more regulation, but to have armed officers, trained armed people manning our schools. if past is prologue, where is the nra's next move going forward? >> well, you know, i think that's a good question because past may not be prologue here. the past was that the obama administration saw absolutely no chance of getting this flew congress. president obama when he campaigned for his first term, said he would like to look at reveezing the assault weapons ban. the white house sent some gentle signal early on they might try to do that, and it was instantly clear that they backed away from it. the mere prospect of president obama's being elected caused a huge run on ammunition, police departments were almost running out of it. now many democrats think the situation is different because of newtown and the other mass shootings this year, so i guess we're going to find out whet

with that. >> well, here is the problem, kelly, with the nra's position. first, they're tone he have did. the public since newtown, or even before turned rather substantially against the idea of allowing assault weapons to be purchased, to allow assault ammo to be purchased. they're factually wrong. the fact is more children are killed accidentally with guns around the house than have been killed in school shootings since 1960 by far. third, you know, it is just defies common sense. people, if you put a guard at a door, what about the other doors of a school? how about the fort hood shooting? the nra had talks about only way you take on a bad guy is a good guy with a gun. fort hood was mobbed with good guys with guns yet, one guy, very determined who took a lot of those soldiers out. so, look, obviously there countries that have mental illness, that have video games, they don't have the problems with guns the united states has. that is the big variable. and, i really think that the public is becoming pretty fed up with the notion that somehow or other we should throw up our hands and do
